You Don’t Have to Be Spiritual to Learn Reiki: A Beginner’s Guide
Have you ever felt curious about Reiki?
Perhaps you’ve had a treatment and wondered what it would be like to learn it for yourself.
Perhaps a friend has told you how much they enjoy practising Reiki.
Or perhaps you’ve simply heard the word and felt a little intrigued.
But then a thought pops into your head.
“I’m not really spiritual. Surely Reiki isn’t for someone like me?”
I hear versions of this question quite often.
And I think it’s one of the biggest things that stops people exploring something they might genuinely enjoy.
So today, I’d love to clear up a few misconceptions about learning Reiki.
Because you might be surprised to discover just how accessible Reiki Level 1 can be.
First, what actually is Reiki?
Reiki is a complementary wellbeing practice that originated in Japan.
It involves gentle hand placements, either lightly touching the body or holding the hands just above it, with the intention of supporting relaxation and wellbeing.
Within traditional Reiki teaching, practitioners describe Reiki in terms of universal life energy.
That’s part of the spiritual philosophy behind the practice.
However, this proposed energy has not been scientifically established, and evidence that Reiki treats specific health conditions remains limited.
For many people, the value of Reiki lies in the peaceful experience, the opportunity to slow down and the regular time they dedicate to themselves.
And you can be interested in those things without holding any particular spiritual beliefs.
Do you need to be spiritual to learn Reiki?
Absolutely not.
You don’t have to believe in angels.
You don’t have to read tarot cards.
You don’t have to understand crystals, auras or chakras before you begin.
And you certainly don’t need to consider yourself psychic or particularly intuitive.
You can simply be curious about Reiki and want to explore it.
Some people approach Reiki from a spiritual perspective.
Others are interested in its meditative and relaxation aspects.
And some discover that learning Reiki encourages them to explore their own beliefs and interests more deeply.
There’s room for different perspectives.
What matters is that you feel comfortable, curious and open to learning.
You don’t need to have a special gift
Another question people often ask me is:
“But what if I’m not naturally gifted?”
I think this comes from the idea that Reiki is something only certain people can do.
But within the Usui Reiki tradition, Level 1 is an introductory course designed for people with no previous training.
You’re taught the principles and practical techniques step by step.
You don’t need to arrive knowing what you’re doing.
That’s the whole point of learning!
During training, you’ll be introduced to traditional Reiki practices, including 2 attunements, which is a ceremonial part of Reiki teaching.
You can explore what that means within the tradition without feeling pressured to have any particular experience or sensation.
You can learn Reiki just for yourself
This is probably one of my favourite things about Reiki Level 1.
You don’t have to want to become a professional Reiki practitioner.
In fact, I think there’s something rather lovely about learning a skill simply because you want to nurture yourself.
We spend so much of our lives learning things for other people.
We learn skills for work.
We learn how to manage our homes.
We learn how to care for our families.
But how often do we learn something purely for our own wellbeing?
Something that encourages us to slow down.
Something that creates a little space in our day.
Something that reminds us we’re worth looking after too.
For me, that is one of the most meaningful aspects of learning Reiki.
My own relationship with Reiki
Reiki has become an important part of my personal wellbeing routine.
I practise self-Reiki daily, and those moments have become an opportunity to step away from everything that’s expected of me.
As a wife, mother and business owner, I know how easy it is to spend the day meeting everybody else’s needs.
And I also know how easy it can be to put ourselves at the bottom of the list.
My Reiki practice gives me dedicated time to be still.
To reconnect with myself.
To notice how I’m feeling.
And to remind myself that I matter too.
My personal experiences have been meaningful to me, although they shouldn’t be taken as evidence that Reiki can treat or cure medical conditions.
And one of the reasons I love teaching Reiki is that I get to introduce other people to a practice they can make their own.
What will you learn during Reiki Level 1?
At Equilibrium Body & Mind, my Reiki Level 1 training is taught one-to-one.
That means the day is focused entirely on you.
There’s time to ask questions, explore the techniques and learn at a pace that feels comfortable.
During the course, we’ll cover:
The history and origins of Usui Reiki
The principles and philosophy behind Reiki
The traditional Reiki Level 1 attunement
Hand positions and practical techniques
How to practise self-Reiki
How to incorporate Reiki into your daily routine
How to practise Reiki with others within the scope of your training
My intention is to make the experience warm, welcoming and enjoyable.
You don’t have to worry about keeping up with a group or asking a silly question.
There are no silly questions!
What if I don’t feel anything?
This is another concern I hear from beginners.
People worry that they won’t feel tingling, warmth or anything unusual during their practice.
But Reiki experiences vary.
Some people report warmth or tingling.
Others feel peaceful or sleepy.
Some notice very little.
None of those experiences determines your worth or ability to learn the techniques.
You don’t need to chase a particular sensation.
You can simply learn, practise and decide what the experience means to you.
What happens after Reiki Level 1?
Once you’ve completed your training, you can begin developing your own self-Reiki routine.
Perhaps you’ll set aside ten minutes in the morning.
Perhaps you’ll make it part of your bedtime ritual.
Or perhaps you’ll simply enjoy having another way to make intentional time for yourself.
Some people choose to continue to Reiki Level 2 later.
Others are perfectly happy with Level 1.
There’s no requirement to progress further.
Learning Reiki doesn’t have to become another achievement to chase.
It can simply be something you do for you.
Is Reiki Level 1 right for you?
You might enjoy Reiki Level 1 if:
You’re curious about Reiki but have no previous experience.
You’d like to develop a regular self-care practice.
You enjoy meditation, mindfulness or relaxation.
You want to explore a new personal interest.
You’re interested in Reiki’s traditional philosophy.
You’d like to learn in a relaxed, supportive environment.
You don’t need to tick every box.
And you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin.
